Community/Legistrative Planning
The mission of the Planning and Development Department is to help facilitate the orderly development of the City as well as to assist the general public in obtaining necessary development approvals.

Planning and Development Department will continue to assist all developers and citizens through the processes of annexation, platting, and zoning, as well as the review of site plans, conditional use permits, and variances. The Department will act as staff for the Plan Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals and will be responsible for setting agendas for these committees as well as compiling and analyzing information for committee action. The Department will also act as staff for the Comprehensive Planning process. In addition, the Department will be responsible for operating the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) which is used extensively to produce maps for various uses throughout the City.

The Department of Planning and Development provides staff support to the following bodies:

  • The City of Verona Planning Commission
    • The Plan Commission considers all Zoning and Land-Use Regulations except Variance requests
  • The City of Verona Zoning Board of Appeals
    • The Zoning Board of Appeals considers variance requests

The Department of Planning and Development also provides support and resources for:

  • The City of Verona Common Council
  • The Verona Area Chamber of Commerce
  • The Verona Area School District
  • The Verona Area Fire District

In addition to these above items, the Department of Planning and Development is involved in a variety of other city planning and land-use regulation activities, such as:

  • Working with adjacent municipalities such as Madison, Fitchburg, and the Town of Verona on matters of mutual†interest and/or concern
  • Creating and updating maps and other resources
  • Maintaining property record files related to zoning and land-use decisions
  • Providing customer service to a diverse set of customers, Verona residents, and business and property owners; realtors, developers, appraisers, property managers, staff from other governmental agencies, and others.

The Department of Planning and Community Development will be working on the following matters during 2005 and beyond:

  • Creating regulations for "Big Box" retail uses
  • Planning for the beautification and enhancement of the downtown area, including matters such as traffic management, parking, street-scape improvements, and improving the pedestrian-friendliness of the downtown area
  • Comprehensive planning for the long-term growth of the community
